Locavore Lunch

In association with Austin Green Art and the Sustainable Food Center, Ms. McKinney created an elegant outdoor dining experience in a parking space adjacent to Republic Square. The temporary work was one of six in downtown Austin on National Parking Day, September 19, 2008. Parking spaces all over the country in cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco were transformed into mini-parks for the day.

Eleanor’s work, entitled “Locavore Lunch” supported the movement to eat locally grown sustainable food from the farmer’s market or your own backyard. (“Locavore” was the Oxford American Dictionary’s 2007 word of the year.) The lunch menu was based on products available from the Austin Farmers’ Market such as feral hog loin, tomatoes, arugula, yellow bell peppers, squash, and fresh herbs. Chef David Garido prepared a mouthful presentation complete with his mother’s zucchini cake recipe for dessert. Tropical plants provided a lush ambiance in contrast to the surrounding asphalt pavement. Luncheon attendees were sponsors of the event.
