Brenham Alley

The Main Street Program of the City of Brenham, Texas secured a T-21 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation for the $1.9 million to develop a hike and bike trail linking downtown with an outlying recreational complex. The downtown portion included curb extensions and crosswalks, trailhead plaza, a landscaped alley way and streetscapes with street trees, lamp posts, benches, planters, information kiosks, drinking fountains and waste receptacles.

The downtown alley renovation transformed a derelict passageway into a people place with a canopy cover stage and market area, an antique cast iron sugar kettle converted into a water feature, a concrete walkway of donor pavers and plaques, evergreen and flowering trees and large pots for seasonal color. The city has held live music events and farmers markets in the alley for residents and tourists.
