In The Works

Civic life is shared at our major cultural facilities – city hall, museums, and libraries. The design of exterior space to accommodate and encourage public interaction is not only critical to the success of a project, but also to the cultural life of a city. Use of regional materials in the design helps to connect participants to the greater natural world. Understanding our regional climate helps to design spaces that mitigate our sometimes harsh environment.

EMLA has been fortunate to design the exterior spaces of some major cultural facilities in Austin. For over eighteen years, the firm has researched public spaces in Texas and how they contribute to the quality of life. This research has been applied to the successful design of outdoor plazas, public gathering areas, and pedestrian walkways.
