23rd Streetscape

Connecting Guadalupe Street, aka “the Drag” across from the UT Campus and Rio Grande Street is the east-west promenade of 23rd Street. In 2004, the architecture firm of Black and Vernooy, was commissioned by the City of Austin to do a Master Streetscape Plan for 23rd. The plan included a sidewalk extension with a new double row of trees on the south side, pedestrian lighting, and pavers. In 2006, Simmons Vedder and Company determined to construct the streetscape for the city in order to expedite the process. Simmons Vedder hired McKinney Landscape Architect to evaluate the master plan, propose a simplified concept, and take it through construction. Bury and Partners, civil engineers, were hired to design the new drainage and utility plans.

The project was turned over to the COA for Construction Administration and completed in August 2010.
